Social Media Users Weigh In On ‘Washington Commanders’ Name Selection

After almost two years, the team formerly known as the Washington Redskins has finally chosen a new name, and it’s getting ripped on social media.

The new name of the team is the Washington Commanders, which seems like something that should have only taken 30 seconds to come up with, not two years, but hey, I guess naming things is hard.

“New name, new marks,” the team tweeted, along with photos of its new logo.

“The future of Washington football is here,” another post from the team said.

Following the announcement, people and publications took to social media to share their opinions on the new name.

A picture of Larry David was all one sports journalist had to contribute.

“The next chapter for the Washington Commanders should be a return to winning, right here in DC,” Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, posted on her social media, along with an endorsing statement.

Opposite of Bowser’s enthusiasm, the Iron Sheik, the sole Iranian champion in WWE history, expressed his displeasure with the new name after it was leaked.

Here are a few more responses via Twitter:
