President Joe Biden is intending to nominate two critics of former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies to key positions within his administration according to an official in the White House. This move signals a continuing effort to erase Trump’s restrictions on immigration.
Biden will nominate Chris Magnus, who is currently serving as the chief of police for the city of Tucson, Arizona, to head up the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which is the agency in charge of border security along with helping to facilitate legal trade and travel.
The president will also tap Ur Jaddou as the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which is responsible for immigration paperwork and processing.
Both Magnus and Jaddou will need to be approved by the Senate, which is currently controlled by the Democratic Party by a slim margin. The chamber is currently divided between Democrats and members of the GOP with Vice President Harris providing the tie-breaking vote.
Magnus served in the Lansing, Michigan Police Department, and was police chief in the cities of Fargo, North Dakota, and Richmond, California, before landing in Tucson, Arizona, the White House official said.
“In each of these cities Chief Magnus developed a reputation as a progressive police leader who focused on relationship-building between the police and community, implementing evidence-based best practices, promoting reform, and insisting on police accountability,” the official said in a statement.
Magnus offered to resign as Tucson police chief last year over the death of a man in custody who said he could not breathe after he was handcuffed and restrained face down. The Tucson city manager rejected his resignation offer.
During the Trump administration, Jaddou worked for the Washington-based immigrant advocacy group America’s Voice as director of DHS Watch, a project that sought to uphold transparency and accountability at the Department of Homeland Security and frequently criticized Trump’s policies.
This speaks volumes about the lack of character from the Biden administration. All that matters to the president and his minions is punishing Trump and his supporters by erasing policy after policy.
And that is the primary motivation for many of Biden’s actions, of that we can be sure. He’s not motivated by doing good things for our country. If he was, then he wouldn’t have just erased immigration policy without properly vetting the potential consequences of doing so.
We wouldn’t have a crisis at the border, that much is for sure.
